Why another calculator gives a different rising sign
The sky is not in dispute. The Ascendant is a piece of spherical geometry, and any two programs that get the instant right agree on it to the arcminute. What they get wrong is the instant. A rising sign changes about every two hours, so a birth time that is an hour off is usually a different sign, and an hour is exactly the size of the commonest clock mistakes: a summer-time rule applied to a year it did not apply in, an AM that should have been a PM, a time converted in the wrong zone.
So this page shows its work. It prints the offset it used and the rule behind it, read from the zone’s history at your actual birth moment rather than from today’s calendar. It marks your hour in the day’s timetable, so you can see whether you were born in the middle of a sign or six minutes from the edge of one. And when the clocks changed that night it asks, because a time that happened twice has two answers and we are not going to pick one for you.
Without a birth time there is no rising sign, only the table. That is a better answer than noon.

- What is my rising sign?
- The sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, seen from where you were born. Astrologers also call it the Ascendant. It moves through all twelve signs every day, about one every two hours, so it is the one placement that needs a birth time as well as a date and a place. Enter all three above and it is computed in your browser, to the minute.
- Is the Ascendant the same as the rising sign?
- Yes. Ascendant is the older name and rising sign the plainer one; both mean the degree of the zodiac rising in the east at the moment of birth. This page prints the exact degree as well as the sign, because a rising sign at 0° or 29° is a rising sign that a small clock error would change.
- I don’t know my birth time. Can I still find my rising sign?
- Not with certainty, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Flip the switch and the page gives you the day’s timetable instead: every sign that rose on your birth date at your birthplace, with the clock hours each one held. If you know you were born “early morning” or “just after lunch”, that usually narrows it to one or two signs. The birth certificate is the place to look; in the United States the long-form certificate carries the time, and hospitals keep records for years. Most calculators fill a blank time field with noon and print whatever noon gives, which is one row of that table with the other twelve hidden.
- Why does another calculator give me a different rising sign?
- Almost always the clock, not the sky. One hour of error moves the Ascendant about half a sign, which is usually across a boundary. The common causes: a summer-time rule applied wrongly for your birth year (Britain ran two hours ahead of Greenwich in the war summers, and the United States had no national rule before 1966), an AM/PM slip, a time typed in your current time zone instead of the birthplace’s, or a birth minutes from a crossing. This page prints the offset it used and names the rule behind it, and marks your hour in the timetable so you can see how close you sat to the edge.
- What happens if I was born during a daylight-saving change?
- If the clocks went back that night, your recorded time happened twice, and the two occurrences can have different rising signs. The page shows both and asks which the record meant rather than picking one. If the clocks went forward, the recorded minute never existed; the page says so and offers the last real minute before the jump and the first after it.
- Does this work for the sidereal zodiac?
- Yes. Choose Sidereal and an ayanamsha (Lahiri is the usual one for Vedic astrology) and the whole timetable shifts with it. A sidereal rising sign is usually the sign before the tropical one, because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart today.
- Is my birth data stored or sent anywhere?
- The rising sign and the timetable are computed on your device; nothing is uploaded to make them. As you type a birthplace, only the typed letters go to our own server to suggest towns, never tied to you.
